Contest rewards as celebrity couples and dietitian reveal love tips - The Star 07-Feb-2012

EVERYBODY knows fruits are great for health. Did you know they can also get you into the mood for love?

Celebrating this Valentine’s Day with a twist, MBG Fruitshop has launched “You Are The Apple Of My Eye Photo Contest” from now till March 15. Simply submit pictures of you and your better half in loving moments with the “third party” — fruits!

The most creative shot will land the winner a grand prize worth RM1,500 — comprising a CMY jewellery set, a night’s stay at Strawberry Park Resort and a fruit basket. In addition, winners are entitled to a “Berry Berry Sweet” lucky draw.

The path in any relationship is not always a bed of roses. Celebrity couples are not spared; they offer their own insights.

Ex-model Steve Yap, who is married to Ellina for nine years, cites communication as key in a relationship.

Their favourite fruits: Steve loves guava while Ellina loves pears.

“We talk all the time about everything — the good stuff and the issues. If it gets too hard to debate face-to-face with my spouse, I will resort to writing short notes and texting her about my feelings. This allows room to filter, cool down and make up,” said Steve.

A famous figure on the catwalk in his heyday, Steve now takes a different walk in life. While still very much involved in the TV/film scene and juggling a property business, Steve prefers spending time with his wife and dotes on his infant daughter Xin Er.

“The most intimate moment for us is when we grind apples into a broth-like meal to feed our daughter. We feel connected and loving as parents while preparing a simple fruity meal for our baby. That really tugs at our heartstrings,” said Steve.

The couple’s favourite time together is eating fruits after dinner while watching a good TV show. Steve loves the guava as it reminds him of his childhood days picking the fruit straight from the tree, while Ellina adores pears.

Friends for years before they dated and married a year ago, TV/radio personality Xandria Ooi and music composer/producer Yuri Wong agreed that a positive mindset and matching personalities made good foundation for a great relationship.

Loving couple: Ooi and Wong with a basket of their favourite fruits.

“It’s good to always remember that we made a choice to be with our partner, not just be with them when times are good,” said Xandria.

Lucky for Ooi, Wong is a kindred spirit and positive-minded like her.

“We’re willing to take the time and effort to communicate and listen to each other so that we don’t let small issues escalate into big problems. Love is being responsible for what we say to and do for each other,” said Xandria.

Her word of advice on love, “At the start of a relationship, everything is effortless. What carries the relationship forward is a commitment to always try, no matter how difficult it gets.

“Communication is not merely talking, it is taking the effort to speak with love and understanding even when we’re upset.”

On the best ‘we’ time, the couple starts the day passionately — making a delicious fruity salad breakfast which includes yogurt, honey, apple, persimmon, grapes and almond sprinkle! Loving a healthy lifestyle, the couple explained the best way to start the day is with a hearty and healthy meal before running off to work. Ooi’s favourite fruit is the mango while Wong’s favourite fruit is ‘jambu air’.

According to local dietitian Indra Balaratnam, some fruits can fire up your imagination and evoke loving feelings.

“Bananas, touted as a fertility symbol due to its resemblance to the male organ, is packed with B vitamins that metabolises and increases energy levels to enhance one’s libido and passion. “Try serving up sliced banana with ice cream, whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce for an enticingly sweet dessert for your sweetheart,” suggested Indra.

“Grapes, according to myths, were also associated with the god of procreation and fertility. As wine is made from grapes, many regard this fruit as having stimulating properties to fire up passion.

“The strawberry, with its passionate red hue and succulent juicy flesh have long been regarded as a very sexy fruit. Its high vitamin C content makes it a nutritious food to enhance fertility. Simply make your strawberries even more romantic by serving them with rich cream, or dipped into decadent melted dark chocolate,” said Indra.
